Health

Depression is one of the most common illnesses of the 21st century, and also one of the most misunderstood. Clinical depression, also known as major depressive disorder, is a mental health problem that affects millions of people around the world and can profoundly alter the personal, family, social and spiritual life of the patient.

In the book Healthy Mind by Doctor of Psychology Julián Melgosa, this illness is analysed in depth from a medical, psychological and Christian perspective, with the aim of offering hope, understanding and tools to cope with it.

A real illness, not a weakness

One of the biggest mistakes made when talking about depression is to minimise it. Phrases such as ‘cheer up’, ‘it's all in your head’ or ‘you have to try harder’ can increase feelings of guilt in someone who is already struggling with symptoms of deep sadness, apathy, loss of energy, insomnia, changes in appetite or thoughts of worthlessness.

Depression is a real illness with a neurological basis and genetic, psychological and social factors that trigger or aggravate it. It can also affect people of faith, as reflected in several biblical characters: Elijah, Job, Hannah and Jonah, who all expressed their emotional pain. The Bible does not condemn their anguish, but shows a God who is close, who listens, accompanies and restores.

What are its most common symptoms?

According to the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), the main symptoms are:

  • Depressed mood most of the day
  • Loss of interest or pleasure (anhedonia)
  • Changes in sleep or appetite
  • Fatigue or lack of energy
  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide

To diagnose depression, at least five of these symptoms must be present for two weeks or more.

The importance of seeking help

Treatment for depression usually requires a combined approach that may include medication, psychotherapy, family support, healthy habits, and, in many cases, faith as a source of comfort and strength. The book Healthy Mind also addresses the role of partners, family, friends, and the community as a support network for those going through this process.

Is it possible to prevent depression?

In many cases, yes. Taking care of your physical health, maintaining healthy relationships, developing a positive mindset, exercising regularly, cultivating faith, and having a support network can significantly reduce your risk. Healthy Minds offers practical strategies for identifying the early signs and strengthening your internal resources before the situation worsens.

A useful resource for you or someone you love

If you or someone close to you is experiencing deep sadness, apathy, or constant discouragement, this book can be a valuable guide. Written by a mental health professional from a Christian perspective, Healthy Mind combines scientific information, real-life testimonials, and advice applicable to everyday life.

Depression can be treated. There is a way out. And there is hope.
