Why does depression strike in old age and how can we face it with hope?

Old age is a stage of life marked by experience, wisdom and enjoyment of the fruits of one's labor. However, it is also a period when many people face profound changes in health, relationships, and environment, which can increase the risk of developing depression. This disorder, far from being “just sadness,” is a major public health problem with serious consequences if not treated in time.

Why does depression occur in old age?

Depression in older adults can begin in two ways. In some cases, it appears for the first time in old age, usually related to environmental factors such as the loss of loved ones, chronic illness, or loneliness. In others, it is a continuation of early-onset depression, meaning that people who already had a history of depression in their youth may see their symptoms intensify over time.

The main risk factors include loneliness, loss of mobility, vision or hearing problems, financial difficulties, and a weak social network. In addition, the use of certain medications and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's, increase the likelihood of depression significantly.

Symptoms in older people

Although the diagnostic criteria are the same as in young adults, depression in older people often manifests itself differently. They may not express overt sadness, but instead show a lack of interest in activities, feelings of worthlessness, neglect of personal hygiene, irritability, or physical pain that does not improve with medical treatment. Thoughts of death or suicide are also sadly common and demand immediate attention.

The impact on health

Depression in later life not only affects emotional well-being but also weakens the body and can hasten death. In addition, it interferes with the treatment of other illnesses such as diabetes, cancer, or cardiovascular disease, as it reduces the patient's motivation to follow medical recommendations.

Prevention and support strategies

The good news is that depression in older adults can be prevented and successfully treated. Regular physical exercise, meaningful social connections, and engaging in purposeful activities act as natural antidepressants. Likewise, maintaining a healthy diet, cultivating positive thoughts, and practicing good sleep habits are key pillars for a healthier ageing process.

The role of family and friends is essential. Listening without judgment, accompanying loved ones to medical appointments, encouraging treatment adherence, and creating spaces for joy and togetherness can make a real difference. Faith and spirituality, according to numerous studies, also bring hope and resilience in the face of depression.

Treatment

When symptoms appear, it is vital to see your general practitioner or mental health professional. Antidepressants and psychotherapy are highly effective, especially when applied with patience and consistency. In addition, self-help techniques and strengthening social ties support the recovery process.

A call for hope

Ageing should not be synonymous with depression. With proper care, family and social support, and professional guidance, older adults can live this stage of their lives with fulfilment and hope. Depression in old age is not a sentence, but a challenge that can be overcome with love, science, and support.
